You're invited...

...to serve as a judge at Michigan DECA’s State Career Development Conference. The Conference is the highlight of the year for more than 2,500 members, advisors and business professionals on March 13 or 14, 2009.

Several exciting and career oriented sessions are planned for the participants. The highlights of the conference include the election of state officers, social and professional opportunities for the participants, and most importantly, the program of competitive events. Students who have qualified at earlier levels of competition will compete at this conference for the right to attend DECA’s International Career Development Conference.

As a judge, you will have the opportunity to participate in all of our activities at the Career Development Conference, but more importantly - to see DECA members in action. Your role as a judge, with your invaluable experiences in industry, is vital to the success of not only this conference, but to DECA and marketing education as a whole.

DECA’s members, advisors, and staff thank you in advance for taking the time from your busy schedule to participate at this conference. We are confident that you will enjoy the experience of judging at Michigan DECA’s State Career Development Conference.

Effective marketing education gives young people the tools and aptitudes they need to pursue their dreams. DECA strives to provide its members with the opportunities to develop those tools through its program of competitive events by:

• motivating students to assume responsibility for self- improvement and self-discipline

• providing a vehicle for students to demonstrate competencies through individual or group action

• evaluating student achievement by means of carefully designed testing devices

• opening constructive avenues for individual and/ or group expression, initiative and creativity

What does a judge do?

DECA has two types of written events: research and chapter projects. A judge working with a research event will evaluate a written project and presentation regarding a marketing research and/or business plan that the student or team has developed.

Judges working with chapter projects will evaluate a chapter’s program of activities that was used to accomplish a specific goal, and the students’ presentation of that project. Judges working with written events will typically evaluate 8-12 entries.

Series & Management Team Decision Making Events
Judges take part in a role-playing situation with the high school students to evaluate how well the student/team demonstrates different marketing performance indicators. In these role playing and/or case study events, students are required to accomplish a task or solve a problem by translating what they have learned in the classroom into effective, efficient, and spontaneous action. Judges typically evaluate 8-12 participants or teams.

What are the events?
Because we match the judges’ expertise with the area being judged, we do not list the events by occupational area; rather we list them according to the concept being evaluated:
- Economic Concepts
- Customer Service
- Entrepreneurship
- Business Management
- Promotion
- Pricing
- Professional Development
- Selling
